What? There are disadvantages with last minute deals? Sure are. I know it seems contradictory. Isn’t a deal good? Sure. Then how can there be disadvantages? Here’s how the story usually goes.
You’ve roamed the world wide web and after weeks of keeping a sharp eye on Alaska cruise offers, you finally see one that’s the lowest price you’ve ever come across. Score! That’s what you think initially, until you start looking at the available staterooms. Darn, no more balconies left.
So you compromise: oceanview or inside is fine.
Then you start looking at the location of the available rooms. One is by the laundry room, the other on a busy path to the pool deck, the next one you see is by the elevator. All high traffic areas! Some people don’t mind of this, but you’re a light sleeper, so a low traffic area is imperative.
You finally decide to take your chances on the inside by the laundry room because how noisy can a laundry room get anyway? You can’t secure your space just yet because you need to look at flights and hotels first.
You start looking into the cost of flights and hotels. Last minute air prices are ridiculous!
Hotel prices seem to be ok, but they don’t have any space at the hotel you were looking at. You look at other hotel options and again, settle.
Do you see a pattern? Certainly, you are getting a great cruise deal, but look at the big picture. How many compromises will you have to make to get that dream vacation, which at this point begs the question: Is it still a dream vacation if you have to make that many compromises?
In the end, you run the risk of paying about the same as you would’ve had you booked earlier, plus you would’ve gotten everything you wanted, or you may even end up paying more, with compromises at that! Any savings you would’ve gotten from that great cruise deal is cancelled out from the high cost of air and maybe even hotel.
