Returning to Alaska with Holland America, again

Dirk PoolSince getting off his first Alaska cruise in 2011 with Holland America’s Volendam, our client Dirk Pool has been thinking about returning to the Great Land and couldn’t wait to get back onboard. Come June 2013, he will be embarking on a cruisetour and he has decided to experience the last frontier with Holland America again.

What is it about Holland America that Dirk loves? Read on to find out.

Vanny: This will be your second time cruising to Alaska, why did you decide to go back?

Dirk: The first time we got on the Alaskan cruise, the experience was unforgettable. After seven days of adventure on the ship, plus the on land excursions, we could hardly wait to take that same cruise again. There is so much to take in, that you just don’t get to enjoy all there is to see in Alaska with just a one time cruise. The size of the ship alone was something we had never experienced before, and we would do it again just to experience all there is to do on the ship alone. It was like being in a floating resort. Alaska is the place to see.

Vanny: You’re doing a cruisetour this time around, what made you decide to do a cruisetour?

Dirk: The decision whether to take the same cruise, or to do the eleven day cruisetour was a very tough decision. My wife Barbara had already said that she would do the seven day cruise again even if we never got off the boat.

Two wonderful ladies, from Cruise Experts Travel, Vanny Chhan (Social Media Coordinator) and Jocelyn Rheault (Cruise and Insurance Specialist) suggested ealier this year about doing the longer cruisetour which involves six days and seven nights on land before you get on the ship to take the three day and four night cruise back to Vancouver. This trip costs more, but the more we thought about it the more we desired to do this trip.

Mt McKinley

The Pools will be headed to Denali National Park next year, home of North America's highest peak, Mt McKinley.

After contacting Jocelyn by phone, we arranged the tour and got the ball rolling for June 11th, 2013. Jocelyn mentioned to us about Cruise Experts Travel arranging our flight as well. We agreed, and Jackie Vouzan (Air Specialist) came on board and got our air travel all arranged for us. How could you not want to book a Cruise with Cruise Experts Travel when we have been treated like royalty by these wonderful ladies.

Vanny: You sailed Holland America’s Volendam last year. Why did you decide to sail with Holland America again to Alaska?

Dirk: When my wife booked the first cruise we took in 2011, she informed me that we were going on the Holland America Cruise ship, the Volendam. In 1951 my parents, with their ten children, sailed from the Netherlands to Canada on a ship called the Volendam. Of course, I was only two years old at that time, but I thought it was very interesting that our first cruise would be on a ship called the Volendam.

The ship was well staffed, and we were treated with the greatest of respect on the ship we were on. Some of the staff members were calling us Mr. and Mrs. Pool. One young fellow, in one of the lounges, called me Uncle Dirk, and my wife Auntie Barbara.

A surprise awaited the Pools in their room.

When you are not used to being served the way we were served on the Volendam, it makes you desire to cruise with Holand America again. I even got to chat with the Captain for a few minutes, and that to me was special.

Vanny: What are a couple things you look forward to most about this trip?

Dirk: Since we will be spending most of our time on land tours, with the train, buses, and a special paddle wheeler boat, I would say that sighting wild life and all the beautiful scenery will be a great enjoyment of this part of the trip.

What I really like as well is the fact that we leave the driving to someone else while we just sit back and relax. It was very hard for me to leave the ship when we went the first time. Weeks later, I was still reliving the experience we had on the cruise.

I believe that, with my vivid imagination, our eleven day cruisetour will be just as hard to get out of my mind once it is over. The excitement from the last trip in 2011 is still fresh in my mind and I can hardly wait for June 11, 2013 to arrive. I’m already counting down the days, and we are still in September 2012. Thank you ladies from Cruise Experts Travel for being there for us all the way.

Thank you so much for the kind words, Dirk! We can’t wait to read about your next Alaskan adventure!

New for 2013, Holland America is offering cruisetours with less days at sea, a great option for those who want to experience more of the interior, but don’t have the time for the usual 7-day cruise, like Dirk. Interested in doing the same? Call 1-800-565-2784.
